REFEREE SEMINAR WITH CERTIFIED REFEREE INSTRUCTOR
MATTHEW COX

Matthew Cox is a Certified Referee Instructor from Durham, NC, and holds an international license in both saber and epee refereeing. Having specialized in saber refereeing for almost 15 years, Matt has refereed at many Grand Prix and World Cup events, and has been a regular fixture at North American Cups. Matt has also served as a club owner and coach, which informed his collaborative approach to referee education.

This referee seminar is perfect for those who desire to become a certified referee, as well as those who are just interested in having a better understanding of the current rules and interpretations. USA Fencing will require ALL sanctioned tournaments to have a minimum of one certified referee by the 2017-18 season. This knowledge and understanding is critical for those fencers looking to improve their own personal fencing skills, and is equally beneficial to parents who would like a better understanding of the sport their children play, and all of its rules.

The material will be delivered in what Matt calls a "lab environment." Participants will not only learn the rules and conventions of fencing, but gain hands-on experience interpreting and discussing live action demonstrations. Matt has used this approach successfully in seminars across the Eastern seaboard, and believes that it is one of the most effective ways to educate fencing referees.

This clinic will be split into two sessions; Foil & Saber on Saturday 10/1 from 9am-12pm followed by a tournament observation, and Epee on 10/2 from 9am-12pm followed by a tournament observation. The new saber rules will also be covered in this seminar. Referee seminar, exam and observation for ratings are all included in the cost.

The total cost is $85 if pre-registered and paid by 9/16/16 and is open to anyone interested in attending (open to the public and members of any division).  Current members of the Tennessee Division ONLY are eligible for a "$30 Rebate" if they pass the exam for a minimum of one weapon.
